Ask Permission Before Taking Photos
Many places in the UAE cannot be photographed, such as government offices, military bases, and military aircraft. Taking photos of locals without permission is also frowned upon, especially for women and their families. If you want to be sure whether you can take a photo of a place or a person, simply ask permission. When taking selfies or phone photos, only take pictures with people you know. Keep your camera inside a bag to avoid disturbing residents going about their day-to-day lives when you are not using it.
Check If Certain Areas Are Gender-Specific
Due to local tradition and culture, some locations in the UAE have separate facilities for men and women. It can also be considered inappropriate to be too close to someone who is not your spouse. Kavan Choksi further explains that hugging or kissing in public is not allowed when interacting with someone of the opposite gender. Shake hands with an Emirati of the opposite gender only if your local host allows it.
Order Food for Sharing
When eating with locals or a group of people, it is inappropriate to order just for one. If you want to try something, be sure to order it in a size that can be shared with the people you're dining with. If your host offers food to you, graciously accept it. Sharing meals means that a person appreciates the company they're with. So if you want to make others feel comfortable around you, Kavan Choksi advises you to abide by this custom.
